Henri Xhonneux's, 1989 film, Marques, based on the internment of Marquis de Sade in the Bastille, is the only film to feature a penis as a primary character. Sade is shown talking to his penis and his penis is shown talking back to him. The controversial film is a blend of real life action and stop-motion animation. It mixed historical fact of the French Revolution and philosophical ruminations of human nature confronted with its basic instincts.
